Our Story

A city vibe, in a small town

The Bank opened in 2019 to bring something new to Dumfries — somewhere for people after a city feel without leaving town.

The position is the thing. The room looks out over the River Nith and the Camera Obscura, which makes it as good for a quiet evening for two as it is for a birthday that runs late. Families are welcome, and there is a children’s menu.

The tapas take their cues from everywhere at once — Sichuan ribs next to a Greek lamb kebab, katsu cauliflower next to nduja nachos — and the kitchen caters to all dietary requirements. Behind the bar there is draught and bottled beer, a long list of spirits, cocktails mixed to order, and wine that is always available by the glass.

One savoury, one sweet and a drink. Swap in a mocktail for a £3 supplement.

Whites, rosés and reds are poured as a 175ml or 250ml glass or sold by the bottle. The prosecco is poured by the glass; the Crémant and the Champagne are listed by the bottle — but the bar keeps bottles open on a Verre du Vin system, so it is worth asking for a glass of any of them.

Our Italian restaurant has left Irish Street after almost ten years and taken a brand new renovated space on the floor above this one — pizza from the log oven, house pasta, steak and seafood. Tapas downstairs on Bank Street, Italian upstairs on the Whitesands — one building, two doors.

The bar here returns the compliment: the La Dolce Vita Spritz has been on the prosecco list for years.
